Eclipse Birthday Party
Tonight, I attended the Eclipse birthday, arranged by the Java User Group Stuttgart. At the event Erich Gamma spoke about open sourcing Eclipse development and its influence on the team at IBM.
Biggest impact on the developers were that they had to deal with users and bug reports directly, rather than having a support organization doing as a “firewall”. Also, it meant to developers that they had to do “community work”, which was reading newsgroups and answering questions (including the dumb ones). The result of open-sourcing Eclipse was more transparency of the development, according to Erich even internally.
After Erich’s talk some JUGS members had organized a trivia quiz, in which i learned some facts about Eclipse - for example, did you know that there are over 700 Eclipse committers at present?
